Site Remediation Engineering
Focus personnel are nationally recognized for their expertise in using
thermal treatment technologies for treating contaminated soils.
Several of our staff regularly serve as peer reviewers for major EPA
publication dealing with mobile thermal treatment technologies and have
presented seminars on design, selection, and evaluation of thermal
treatment equipment at national and international conferences.
Focus staff members also serve on the U.S. EPA Superfund Technical
Assistance Response Team to provide consultation on difficult thermal
treatment applications at Superfund sites.
We also have extensive experience in the design,
evaluation, and operation of mobile thermal treatment systems. We
have performed technology assessment studies for virtually all types of
mobile thermal desorption, pyrolysis, and high temperature incineration
systems that have been used for treating soils and other wastes at
Superfund sites. Feasibility studies have been conducted for sites
contaminated with dioxins, PCBs, pesticides, polynuclear aromatic
compounds, volatile organic compounds, and petroleum products.
Several of these studies have been conducted for potentially responsible
party groups to evaluate the most cost-effective treatment alternative
for a specific site. Studies have also been conducted for numerous
remediation contractors to estimate performance characteristics of their
equipment at specific sites, to troubleshoot operational problems, and
to optimize operations to increase waste processing capacity.
Site Remediation Services include:
 | Waste characterization studies |
 | Treatability test planning and implementation |
 | Process feasibility studies |
 | Thermal treatment systems design, evaluation, and
troubleshooting |
 | Remedial design specification of development |
 | Remediation services contractor evaluation |
 | Remediation project management |
 | Permitting strategy development |
 | Permit application development |
 | Performance test management |
 | Regulatory liaison |
As a service to clients, we maintain an
extensive database on mobile thermal treatment equipment
characteristics, performance testing results, project case histories,
and costs. This database contains information on equipment
configurations, capacities, operational limits, soil treatment results,
and stack emissions results for virtually all thermal treatment projects
that have been conducted at Superfund sites in the United States since 1985.
A parallel unpublished database is maintained that contains the results
of thermal desorption and incineration laboratory, bench, and
pilot tests. This information is used to assist our clients by:
 | Identifying the types of equipment and operating
conditions that have been used to treat specific chemical compounds |
 | Summarizing the project experience of potential
contractors |
 | Determining achievable soil cleanup levels and
stack emissions concentrations |
We have also developed a library of proprietary
software for performing components of thermal treatment feasibility
studies. Software has been developed for performing waste
characterization studies and process mass and energy balance studies and
for estimating project costs.
